Abstract
The eighteen papers presented in this collection are divided into five sections. The first section presents a macro-perspective relating to assessment, particularly the matriculation examination. The second section raises the questions of standards and standardization – terms routinely used in any discussion about examinations. The fourth section illuminates issues not often made explicit, that affect the quality of education. The papers in the fifth section point to some future scenarios: what happens to learners after gaining a Senior Certificate, and what of the FETC?
