Abstract
This background paper was prepared for the Mastercard Foundation report, Secondary Education in Africa: Preparing Youth for the Future of Work. Commissioned by the Varkey Foundation, this literature review is one component of a wide-ranging study on the education of secondary school teachers in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). It provides the theoretical background for the larger study, which culminates in an overview report. The paper focuses on two related issues: pre-service training and in-service training. In doing so, the literature review uses existing published research to explore secondary education teacher preparation, professional development and career progression.
